“Comparing Croatian, Portuguese and Italian Communities in Canada: Sue Palisak, Veronica Rodrigues, and Ralph Magliaro” ~ by Ava Magliaro

Exploring Ethnic Communities in Ontario

Ava Magliaro decided to interview members of various ethnic communities to compare their experiences in Canada, talking with Sue Palisak, Veronica Rodrigues, and Ralph Magliaro. Sue Palisak from Stoney Creek grew up in a Canadian-Croatian community and played sports in elementary and high school. Both her children also participate in competitive sports.

Veronica Rodrigues is a first-generation Portuguese immigrant, living in Hamilton, Ontario and studying at McMaster University. She played competitive hockey and was goalie for her team.

Ava Magliaro compares their experiences with Ralph Magliaro of Hamilton, a first-generation Italian immigrant and her father. He still travels to Italy where his brothers, nieces, nephews, and immediate family still reside. He reflects on his heritage and growing up playing recreational sports in his community.

Magliaro provides notes of her three interviews followed by a summary and comparison of her discussion with her interviewees who represent two different generations (Generation X and Generation Z). Magliaro was surprised to learn that the members of Generation X immigrant communities have modern thoughts about gender equality moving beyond the European immigrant experience.
